Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these drugs should be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually have a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Experts believe the way of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
